What SIM card to take in the Philippines

  • 01/06/2023

Planning a trip to the Philippines? Figuring out which sim card to bring can be a challenge, but don't worry! We have all the information you need in this blog article. Read on, and by the end of the article, you'll have a much clearer idea of which sim card is best to bring on your trip.

Do divers need to buy sim cards at the airport? Will it be beneficial for them?

You can buy a regular SIM card at the airport for between 1,000 and 1,500 pesos (most likely 1,500). This package includes calls, texts, and Internet traffic – although people usually do not use it all in one month. Typically, the Internet package (which is 40–50 pesos for an empty SIM card plus 100–600 pesos for the Internet package and 50–100 pesos for the balance) is only needed to send a few texts and make very few calls.

Overall, it's too expensive for convenience – you'll walk out of the airport with a fully functional sim card, and you won't have to stress about it. But if you're on a tight budget, you may have to do without the internet and register the sim card yourself (there's a URL on the back of the package with all the instructions).

What SIM card should I get?

Choosing the right sim card is an important part of preparing your phone for an island trip. Different providers offer different data plans and offers, so be sure to compare options before settling on one company. Once you've done your research and selected a particular service provider, purchase or activate a sim card to start your phone trip.

There are two major telecommunications service providers in the Philippines, Globe, and Smart. Generally, Smart offers the best Internet service; however, it may not be the best for your area. It's impossible to say which carrier is best in any given city or island, as results can vary greatly even on neighboring streets. On the islands of Panglao and Bohol, both operators perform about the same.

Also, Smart does not always get a text message with a code to register GCash, on Globe there is no problem.

You can check the tariffs of the operators on their websites before deciding on an operator.

Smart

It is worth noting that smart offers unlimited 5G in standard rates, as well as some data for other networks. There is also a special rocket sim tariff; you can buy it from mobile operators or on the lazada website for 799 pesos a month with full unlimited access. Globe also used to provide unlimited service, but it seems that this service has now been cancelled.

In addition, you can always find cafés with free Wi-Fi, the airports also have Internet with check-in via a sim card for half an hour, even if it does not have an Internet package and ran out of money, but you need to activate it, as mentioned above.

In conclusion, the Philippines offers many options for both pre-paid and post-paid sim cards. Whether you are looking for a short-term connection while on vacation or a more permanent stay, there is something to suit your needs. With many data plans and carriers to choose from, the decision can be overwhelming; however, by weighing the benefits of each option in terms of coverage and cost, you can find the perfect sim card for your diving adventure in the Philippines.
